The Arts Secondary School of Gerakas (Kallitechniko Gymnasio Geraka) is the first of its kind in Greece, founded in 2004. The school curriculum combines general education classes with studies in the Arts and spans across 7th to 12th grades. Since its founding, similar schools have been established in the country. A common program of studies, designed for all Art Schools, was subsequently implemented in 2016. Art classes fall under three specialization areas: Fine Arts, Theater/Cinematography, and Dance. In Junior High School, all students attend classes from all three areas while in Senior High School, students specialize in their area of choice. Students are taught Art subjects for 14 class periods per week in Junior High and 10 class periods in Senior High. Attending classes from all three areas facilitates active involvement in the Arts and promotes interdisciplinary education. Hence, theatrical performances are staged in close collaboration with the Dance department with the support of Fine Arts in costume design and stage setting. This symbiosis amongst different forms of artistic expression strengthens experiential learning, systematic interaction and exchange of creative ideas. Thanks to this unique combined curriculum scheme, students benefit from participation in video, documentary, photography, dance and fine arts competitions and attain high scores in the University Entry Examinations. Apart from being accepted in prestigious schools in Law and Medicine, an impressive 8 out of 10 students join the Fine Arts School, the National Theater, the State Theater and the State Dance School. Admission exams Being the oldest, biggest and most respected institution in its field, our school attracts big number of applicants. Entry exams are held in late June every year and include theater and dance auditions, fine arts exams and written discourse exams on a topic that requires creative imagination for the drafting of a story through visual cues. Applicants are assessed by committees established ad hoc for this purpose.
